More than 4,000 locations across the country, including several in Washington, Greene and Fayette counties, will hold the Drug Enforcement Administration’s 21st National Prescription Drug Take Back Day event this Saturday, October 23rd.
Penn Highlands Mon Valley is once again working with the Carroll Township Police Department to host a Drug Recovery Day event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Anthony M. Lombardi Education Center on the hospital campus. Unused prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, and ointments that have expired can be left at the center’s main entrance.
“Unused prescription drugs all too often end up in the wrong hands, so it’s important to dispose of them safely,” Peggy Brown, Penn Highlands Mon Valley’s director of pharmacy, said in a news release. Ta. “This event will help reduce accidental overdoses in children and pets, as well as illegal abuse and intentional overdoses of teens and adults. That’s why we encourage our community to We encourage people to clear out their shelves and turn in their prescriptions to the hospital.ā
DEA will accept tablets, capsules, patches, and other solid prescription and over-the-counter medications during Take Back Day events. VAPE devices and cartridges are also accepted, as long as the lithium battery is removed.
DEA does not accept illegal drugs, syringes, or other sharp objects.
There are several drug take-back day event locations throughout southwestern Pennsylvania, held every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
In Washington County, you may visit the Canonsburg Police Department in the Shop ‘n Save parking lot at 617 W. Pike Street. South Strabane Police recovered unwanted or unused drugs at Sam’s Club in Trinity Point, and Cecil Township Police Department held a Take Back Day event at Dollar General, 3575 Millers Run Road. will be hosted.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Department is accepting drop-offs at the Main Street Pavilion in downtown Washington, and the City of Washington, Chartier Police Department, McDonald Police Department, and North Strabane Police Department are holding Take Back Day events at their respective police stations.
Mount Pleasant Police will hold the event at City Hall, 31 McCarrell Road, Hickory.
Greene County residents can participate in Drug Take Back Day by visiting the state police station at 255 Elm Drive in Waynesburg.
Fayette County Drug Take Back Day event locations include the state police stations at 1070 Everly Way in Lemont-Furnas and 560 Circle Drive in Belle Vernon.
A drug take-back day event is also planned at Penn State Fayette’s Eberly campus. People can drop off medical supplies at Lemont Furnace’s Everly Building, 2201 University Drive, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The DEA requires that all personal information be removed or blacked out from the label before the drug is deposited.
More than 93,000 people died from drug overdoses in the United States last year, the highest number of drug-related deaths ever, according to the Centers for Disease Control. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration reports that most people who misuse prescription drugs knowingly or unknowingly obtained the drugs from family members or friends.
