HELENA, Mont. — On Friday, the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) released a draft environmental assessment (EA) for Pacific Steel & Recycling Co.’s application to construct an autoshredder residue landfill in Yellowstone County.
The proposal includes approximately 90 acres of a 320-acre private property located at the corner of Route 87 and Shepard-Acton Road, six miles west of Sheppard and 11 miles north of Billings.
In the application, Pacific Steel and Recycling Approximately 25,000 tons proposed for landfill auto shredder residue It is collected annually from the Billings recycling facility. DEQ reviews and licenses solid waste management facilities and evaluates applications according to the requirements of state administrative regulations. These requirements include groundwater monitoring, stormwater management., and operational standards. The application review and permitting process ensures that projects protect human health and the environment.
DEQ has prepared a draft EA in compliance with the Montana Environmental Policy Act to analyze the potential impacts of the proposal. After publication of the draft EA, there will be a 10-day public comment period after which DEQ will consider comments and make a final decision on the application.
