A 45-year-old Davenport man is facing felony charges after police say he stole from Walmart in Davenport multiple times.
Billy Paul is charged with ongoing criminal mischief and second-degree theft, according to court records.
On Oct. 4, Davenport police detectives investigated multiple thefts at the Walmart at 5811 Elmore Ave. between April 11, 2023 and Oct. 18, 2023, according to an arrest affidavit. An investigation has begun.
On April 12, around 9:15 p.m., Paul entered Walmart and “began selecting several high-value items, at which point he pushed the items out a nearby fire door without paying,” police said in a sworn statement. argued in the book.
The affidavit states that Paul “was caught on surveillance video performing this act and stole a total of $958 during this incident.”
As detectives were collecting surveillance footage from the April incident, Paul again arrived at Walmart, this time with another person, just after 8 p.m. on Oct. 15. The arrest affidavit states the two “selected numerous items to be placed in a cart that (Paul) pushed.”
Police allege that during this incident, Paul again pushed the cart through a nearby fire door without paying for the items, stealing a total of $588.08.
Shortly before 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, detectives were notified that Paul had returned to Walmart, where he was identified by Walmart staff inside the store, “selected an item, and concealed the item on his person.” ,” police allege in the affidavit.
Walmart staff attempted to confront Paul, but Paul “ran through every last department and got into a nearby vehicle, later determined to be a gray 2007 Mazda sedan with no license plate,” police allege in the affidavit. are doing.
According to the affidavit, officers intercepted the vehicle at Jersey Ridge Car Wash, 5325 Jersey Ridge Road. Officers found stolen property valued at $318.86 inside the vehicle.
Police also found items stolen from another local store inside the vehicle. “Investigators determined that the property belonged to the Lowe’s at 3855 Elmore Avenue,” the affidavit said, valued at $408.
According to the affidavit, police allege Paul stole a total of $1,891.74 worth of merchandise from Walmart in three separate incidents.
The affidavit indicates the incidents also occurred at Von Maur at NorthPark Mall, 320 W. Kimberly Road, between Feb. 24 and March 12, 2023.
The affidavit also shows Paul was convicted of fifth-degree theft in 2000, first-degree theft in 2006, and fourth- and second-degree theft in September 2023.
Paul was being held Thursday in the Scott County Jail on bail totaling $11,000 and has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Oct. 27 in Scott County Court.
