Connecticut high school seniors who are in the top 30 percent of their graduating class are now eligible for automatic admission to colleges in the state.
The University of Connecticut System (CSCU) has partnered with Common App, a college admissions application that allows students to apply to multiple schools at once, to offer high school seniors automatic admission to all schools in the CSCU system.
The partnership also extends to Mitchell College, the University of Bridgeport, the University of New Haven, St. Joseph’s University and Goodwin College.
According to CSCU President Terrence Chen, automatic admission eligibility is a way for CSCU to remove barriers to higher education and make college applications more accessible for Connecticut students.
“By making this as easy and accessible as possible, we create opportunities for students from many socio-economically marginalized communities and backgrounds to be able to come to our institutions and receive a great education. ” said Professor Chen.
The partnership grew out of conversations Chen had with K-12 educators and leaders who expressed the need for a simpler application process for their students.
“This partnership represents access and equity in education while helping to increase the number of college-bound high school seniors who will ultimately be ready to enter our state’s workforce,” Chen said. said.
Eligible students have until Friday, October 27th to apply for the first round of automatic enrollment. There is no fee for applying.
Common App CEO Jenny Rickard said in a statement that the company is excited to partner with the state to make higher education accessible to all students.
“The next chapter of Common App aims to reimagine the admissions process so that all students feel welcome and ready to apply to and attend college.” said Rickard. This partnership is one of many ways he can simplify the admissions process and expand access to post-secondary opportunities. ”
