The weather may not be typical for Thanksgiving, but that only makes things better heading into the first holiday weekend of the season. Red River Zoo’s Holiday Night Celebration focuses on outdoor fun, including walks in decorated spaces, sledding, and campfires with s’mores. There will also be plenty of indoor activities, including a sugar cookie decorating station, letter writing to Santa, and hot cocoa and coffee. This fun event will be held this Friday and Saturday and December 1st, 8th and 15th from 5:30pm to 8:30pm. Admission is $5 for children up to 14 and $8 for ages 15 and older. redriverzoo.org.

Seeing Charlie Parr’s show seems only fitting during this weekend of celebrating American heritage. This singer and guitarist is influenced by the classic folk and blues tradition, and has worked with the likes of Blind Lemon Jefferson, Hambone Willie Newbern, and Brother Claude Ely. He mixes songs by artists such as “Easy Rider Blues,” “Roll and Tumble Blues,” and “Ain’t No Grave” with his music of Americana arranged with his own finger picking and stomping. . The holiday season has just begun, but if your energy levels are still undecided, Saturday’s Duel Piano Show might help you get energized for the month ahead. Dave Eicholtz and Ted Manderfeld bring the 20-year-old’s performance to the Fargo Theater, featuring a mix of cover songs, jokes and gags. Don’t be surprised if you hear a Christmas song or two.
