The City of Newport is excited to announce a lineup of festive holiday events this weekend to kick off the holiday season. Residents and visitors alike are invited to participate in Newport activities that capture the spirit of the season. Bring your family and take a free photo with Santa. Santa will be available for photos at the Newport Fire Station on Saturday from 2pm to 4pm. On Saturday at 5:30 p.m., he and other city officials will attend the city’s tree lighting ceremony in front of Newport City Hall. The city manager and mayor will lead the community in a tree lighting countdown marking the official start of the holiday season. After the tree lighting, the public is invited to the East Row Winter Block Party on Saturday, Dec. 2 from 6:30 a.m. until 10 a.m. in Hamlet Alley next to Coach’s Corner Bar. There will be live music, drink specials, food trucks, outdoor tents, fire pits and gas heaters to keep you warm. Santa and his sleigh will also be available for photos. Pets are also welcome. Children are encouraged to write letters to Santa and drop them in his mailbox on the first floor of City Hall. This mail will be delivered to the North Pole by express delivery.
