A makeover of Central Michigan University’s general education programs, several new undergraduate and graduate certificates, and program deletions were announced by the university’s faculty and administration at this year’s third Academic Senate meeting.
The meeting was held on Tuesday October 10th at the Education and Welfare Building.
General education programs are reorganized
The general education program is being revamped to include two areas of study required for all undergraduate students: competency and university programs.
Professor Joshua Smith, who currently serves as interim director of general education, said the changes are aimed at making it easier to evaluate the program.
“What we have at the moment is a huge program that is very difficult to evaluate. There are nearly 70 student learning outcomes associated with it, which is what makes it difficult to evaluate the program. One,” Smith said. . ”
The program’s ad hoc committee does not have an overview of these changes at this time, but will be gathering feedback from across the university as the revisions impact both students and staff.
“The important thing is that we have a lot of opportunities to get feedback from the community, and when I say community feedback, I mean the whole community… I mean, this is going to impact everyone. ,” Smith said. . ”
Smith said a website is being developed by general education leadership to display possible models for these changes and allow community members to leave feedback, and students will receive more information about the proposal via email. It is scheduled to be done.
Certificates and programs to add and remove

CMU plans to implement these in the fall of 2024, she said. The certificate is available to all students, regardless of major or minor.
