Friday, January 5, 2024A new owner has taken possession of the property after Walmart closed its Brooklyn Center store last April.
A representative for Sun Foods Supermarket, located at 6350 Brooklyn Blvd., told CCX News that the company purchased the building.
Three sources confirmed to CCX News that the building, located at 1200 Shingle Creek Crossing, has been sold to a new owner.

The sale was completed on Dec. 29, according to the city of Brooklyn Center.
Official details of the sale have not been made public.
The real estate agent who brokered the deal declined to comment on the buyer or potential tenants.
Walmart, the building’s previous owner, did not respond to a request for comment. Gatlin Development, the Florida-based developer of Shingle Creek Shopping Center, also did not respond to a request for comment.
As of the afternoon of Jan. 5, there are no certificates of property value in state records. The Hennepin County Assessor valued the property at $11 million in 2023.
Walmart previously served as the anchor store at Shingle Creek Crossing. This shopping center was built to replace the former Brookdale Mall.
Built in 1962, Brookdale Mall is one of the four original “Dale” malls in the Twin Cities area. It lost popularity during the Great Recession and was later redeveloped as Shingle Creek Crossing. Walmart stores opened with great optimism.
Former Brooklyn Center Mayor Tim Wilson said in 2011, “We’re looking at revitalizing Brooklyn Center, redeveloping it and reinventing the city. And this is just the beginning.” he said.
But when Walmart closed last April, Brooklyn Center City Manager Reggie Edwards called it a “devastating and significant economic loss to our region.”
Meanwhile, Brooklyn Center Police told CCX News the store and shopping center is a crime hotspot and is requesting service.
Ethnic grocer buys real estate
Sun Foods is an ethnic supermarket with a wide variety of products.
Reuben Tarr, a Sun Foods shopper, said he was “excited” to hear about the ethnic grocer’s plans to expand.
“I’m from Liberia, West Africa, and this is one of the few stores where Africans always have everything they need,” Tarr said. “Every country in Africa comes here to shop, the Middle East comes here to shop. Hispanics come here to shop. It’s just universal and it’s That’s what I like about it.”
