Bluesky, the decentralized X-rival (formerly Twitter) social media platform, is all set to get its first third-party app. The platform remains invite-only, has more than 1.5 million users, and can be accessed through a web client or apps for iOS and Android. However, the Jack Dorsey-led social network remains in private beta, and the official app lacks certain features that would make the platform more enjoyable. Following the principle of decentralization, Bluesky provided an API to developers who wanted to build their own third-party apps, and could also offer new and improved features and a different user interface. While several such apps are currently in the development and testing stages, Graysky became the first third-party Bluesky app to be deployed to the App Store.
According to a report from TechCrunch, Graysky is currently available for pre-order on the App Store with a release date of October 21st. The app will also be available on the Play Store. Like all third-party apps, it also offers some new features. It promises a new layout that prioritizes feeds, support for GIFs, inline translation, a Quick View Likes tab that can easily appear on a user’s profile, hashtags, and more.

Graysky becomes Bluesky’s first third-party app
According to TechCrunch, Graysky was built by Samuel Newman, a London-based software engineer who goes by @mozzius.dev at Bluesky. Newman called Bluesky a “better Twitter” and explained that his desire to bring new features to the platform that Bluesky doesn’t support was a key motivation for developing Graysky. That’s why he focused on showing likes on people’s profiles and supporting his GIFs with Tenor.
To further differentiate it from Bluesky, it also has an interface that lets you access your feed directly instead of your profile. In the official app, first go to your Home Timeline (also known as Skyline). Since the platform is decentralized, you can also choose from all the different feeds that others have built from the explore interface.
If you’re on iOS, you can pre-order and get the app on October 21st. If you’re an Android user, you’ll have to wait a little longer as the app will be arriving soon.
