BLOOMINGTON – The superstars of Bent Elementary School invite you to their 100th anniversary party.
“It is an honor to celebrate 100 years of teaching and learning here this year,” Principal Guillermina Delgado said.
The PTO began planning the anniversary last year, allowing the team to learn about the school’s history and prepare to share it with the community.
“It was really fun to learn about the history of Bent and we're really looking forward to all of our guests being able to learn some of that information at our celebration,” PTO member Harriet Steinbach said.
Historical tales include the demolition of Hawthorne School to make way for Bent School, and when students voted for a Superstar as the school's mascot in 1975. But the event isn't just for the community to learn about the school; it's also a chance for veteran Superstars to reminisce.
“We're really looking forward to having our Bent High School graduates return. We've been trying as much as we can to let people throughout the community know that anyone who ever attended Bent High School is always welcome at our celebration,” Steinbach said. “We're really looking forward to it because we'll be having tours of the school. It's going to be really fun for them to see what the school is like now and reminisce about what it was like when they were students there.”
Overall, the PTO and school leaders are looking forward to sharing some fun times with the community while celebrating a major milestone.
“It's great to see all the old superstars come in, teachers who retired after teaching here, former principals who were invited to come and see what the school is like now,” Delgado said. “It's always fun to hear the stories of the adults who went to Bent.”
Bent Elementary is an elementary-level bilingual school in Bloomington Public School District 87. The school became bilingual 19 years ago, and Principal Delgado began her career as a second-grade teacher before taking on the leadership of the school five years ago.
According to the school's website, each morning students hear a message of encouragement in English and Spanish, which is followed by them reciting the school pledge in both languages.
As the school has always celebrated diversity, Principal Delgado wants to make sure everyone feels welcome at next week's fiesta. Check it out below:
