Apple’s latest tvOS beta suggests that the iTunes Movies and TV Shows app on Apple TV will be deprecated. 9to5 mac reports that the former home of streaming purchase and rental for set-top boxes is no longer included in the tvOS 17.2 Release Candidate (RC) and is now available to developers. (Unless Apple discovers an unexpected bug, RC firmware is typically identical to the public version.) It was first reported in October that Apple would incorporate the iTunes app into the TV app.
9to5 mac According to , the iTunes Movies and iTunes TV Shows home screen icons are still present in the tvOS 17.2 firmware, but they point to the TV app, where older functionality is present. The publication posted a photo of a redirect screen that read, “Your iTunes movies and purchases have been moved.” Buy or rent movies, and find your purchases in the Apple TV app. ” Below that, there are options to “Go to Store” or “Go to Purchase.”
This change does not remove any core functionality, as the TV app replicates the purchase, rental, and purchase management functionality of the iTunes Movies and TV Shows app. The move is likely aimed at streamlining, or getting rid of the last vestiges of the aging iTunes brand, while driving more users to Apple TV+ subscriptions.
The update also adds some features to the TV app on Apple’s set-top boxes. These include the ability to filter by genre in the Purchased section, the availability of box sets in store listings, and a new sidebar design for easier navigation.
Apple is increasing its investment in video content as it relies more on its services sector for growth.Martin Scorsese’s Murderers of the Flower Moon It opened in theaters in October to critical acclaim and generated awards season buzz for months to come. (It has already become the first streamer to win a Best Picture Oscar in 2022.) Scorsese’s film is currently available for rent or purchase on the TV app and will be coming to Apple TV+ “at a later date.” Apple’s high-profile original series include: ted lasso, Severance pay, the morning show, foundation and siloamong others.
