Google and Apple have removed two apps offering international eSIM services from their respective app stores in India, Google Play Store and Apple App Store. These apps were removed following an order from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) under the Ministry of Telecommunications. The DoT has reportedly directed the removal of these apps to curb cyber fraud. The government has also asked internet service providers and telecom companies to block the websites of these two apps in India.
What are the two “banned” apps?
The banned apps are Airalo and Holafly. These apps have been removed from Google Play Store in the Indian market. Both apps offer eSIMs that enable communication services in different parts of the world.
Neither Apple nor Google have made public statements regarding the removal of these apps. The companies took action after receiving orders from the Department of Transport on Thursday (January 4).
Why these apps were banned
Government officials said it was discovered that fraudsters were misusing unauthorized eSIMs containing international phone numbers to commit cyber crimes in the country and deceive innocent citizens.
Incidentally, eSIM providers that offer digital SIM cards for voice calls and internet data packs without requiring a physical SIM card require a No Objection Certificate (NoC) from the DoT.
However, other eSIM providers such as Nomad eSIM, aloSIM, etc. can be downloaded and used by users in India on these app stores.
