Antioch University's School of Environment and Sustainability is embarking on a year-long celebration marking 50 years of community, excellence, impact and leadership. To mark this milestone, we are launching a comprehensive series of events and international field study opportunities. The celebration honors our proud tradition of educating, inspiring and empowering a generation of environmental leaders committed to advancing a more just, sustainable and healthy future.
Environmental justice depends on democratic power, policies, practices, and institutions. Democracy comes about through dialogue. It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government apart from every other form of government ever tried. Democracy is not what we have, it is what we do, and if you're not at the table, you're on the menu.
At their best, democratic institutions create spaces for a sense of belonging, the rule of law, justice, and active participation in decisions that affect their members' lives. Increasing rights, protections, democratic representation and participation has been the work of environmental and social justice advocates in the United States and other countries for generations. New forms of rights are emerging, such as the right to a healthy environment and the rights of nature.
The 50th anniversary celebration will kick off on Sept. 6 with a virtual presentation by Antioquia University alumni and Nobel Peace Prize winners. Registration link here.
