Australia’s World Test Championship and ODI World Cup defenses will be shown exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.
The streaming platform has secured broadcast rights to all International Cricket Council (ICC) tournaments for men and women in Australia.
Foxtel/Kayo broadcast the entire recent ODI World Cup, while the Nine Network screened the Australian match and a few others. However, there is no free-to-air element under this new agreement.
In Australia, men’s home Tests and all women’s internationals will continue to be broadcast free-to-air on Seven, while men’s white-ball internationals will be broadcast on Foxtel. The 2027 and 2031 men’s away Ashes series will be shown on the Nine Network.
The move comes just days after the federal government reaffirmed its commitment to anti-siphoning measures in sport.
Communications Minister Michel Rolland last week introduced legislation in parliament to update anti-siphoning measures that require first refusal of free-to-air services for important sporting events.
“Regardless of where they live or their income, all Australians should have the opportunity to enjoy free television coverage of iconic sporting events,” Mr Rowland said.
ICC Director Geoff Allardyce welcomed the partnership with Amazon.
“We are very pleased to enter into a new four-year partnership with Prime Video for ICC cricket rights in Australia,” he said in a statement. “The recently concluded Men’s World Cup has highlighted the interest and passion for ICC events around the world, particularly in Australia where cricket fans have enjoyed recent successes for the men’s and women’s teams.
“We look forward to working with Prime Video Australia to bring innovative coverage of world-class cricket to even more Australian fans.”
The new partnership between ICC and Amazon will also broadcast New Zealand’s home international matches in India, starting with the Men’s U-19 World Cup in January, with the first senior tournament being the Men’s T20 in the West Indies and USA. It will be the World Cup. Later this year, the Australian women’s team will compete in the T20 World Cup in Bangladesh from September to October.
