The Birds of Prey World Cup in Beaver Creek over the weekend has been canceled due to heavy snow and strong winds. Three races, including the Super G, were canceled due to bad weather on Sunday.
The organization has never had to cancel multiple races on a scheduled weekend due to weather since 1981, its first year hosting international races.
Last year, the same thing happened in 2018 in one downhill race. The Birds of Prey event was canceled in 2016 due to unseasonably warm weather and again in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We had great weather on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday leading up to the race weekend, then due to heavy snow, poor visibility and high winds we ultimately had to cancel Friday’s downhill, Saturday’s downhill and super-G. on Sunday,” said Mark Imhoff, president and CEO of the Vail Valley Foundation.
The Xfinity Birds of Prey Audi FIS Ski World Cup is a collaboration between the nonprofit Vail Valley Foundation, FIS, US Ski & Snowboard, Vail Resorts, Beaver Creek Resort Company, Beaver Creek Resort, U.S. Forest Service, and Xfinity. It is sponsored by , Celsius energy.
