AliExpress and Temu, Chinese shopping platforms that allow Korean consumers to buy products directly from companies based in China, have emerged as the fastest-growing apps in South Korea this year.
AliExpress users increased by 3.71 million in November compared to January, according to a survey by mobile app analysis service Wiseapp Retail Goods on Wednesday about the Android and iOS mobile apps Koreans used most frequently this year.
In November alone, 7.07 million users used AliExpress.
Temu ranks as the second fastest growing app in South Korea, gaining 3.54 million users during the same period. Temu went viral and became the most downloaded app in the US in 2023.
AliExpress and Temu are subsidiaries of China’s leading e-commerce giants Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. and Pinduoduo Holdings Inc., respectively.
As Chinese direct purchasing apps expand their presence in South Korea, Toss, a local easy money transfer and payment platform, and NH All One Bank, a financial app from NH Nonghyup Bank, rank third as the highest rated apps. Secured 4th place. User growth.
The app that Koreans used the most was YouTube, with an average monthly usage time of 99.8 billion minutes, almost three times the 34 billion minutes of the second-place mobile messaging app KakaoTalk.
