Looking for new AI apps to try? Or want to know which ones show promise?
Luckily, Andreessen Horowitz just released the third installment of their “Top 100 Gen AI Consumer Apps” list of the most used apps in this space. This is a great way to find lesser known apps that are gaining attention, and it also helps you see how the big players in this space are stacking up against each other.
Every six months, the venture capital firm ranks the top 50 AI-first web products by monthly unique visits and the top 50 AI-first mobile apps by monthly active users.
As expected, OpenAI's ChatGPT remains the reigning champion, taking the top spot on both lists for the third time.
But other AI chatbots are adding to the competition: Perplexity and Claude both made it into the top five web products, jumping from seventh and tenth place to third and fourth, respectively.
Apps like Microsoft Edge and Photomath maintained their second and third places respectively, while Character.AI moved up from third place to replace Gemini as the second most popular web product.
While the AI giants continue to compete fiercely, new stars are also making inroads and enhancing people's creativity.
According to the research, of the 12 new additions to the list, 58% are creative tools focused on content generation and editing of images, videos, music, audio, etc. These include Luma (#14), which can create realistic 3D images, Viggle (#21), an AI-powered animation tool that can animate any character with text prompts, and SeaArt (#29), an AI art generator.
The AI wave is also hitting music: Suno, a generative music app that lets you easily create AI songs based on text prompts, made the biggest jump in the Creative Tools category, climbing from 36th to 5th place in Web Products. Newcomer Udio, another generative model that creates songs via text prompts, made it to 33rd place.
Image and video content editing was also a big hit in the mobile rankings, with tools like Meitu (9th), SNOW (30th) and Adobe Express (35th) making big leaps.
Users are not only interested in creating but also dating. AI-powered dating app RIZZ appears on the mobile list for the first time, ranking 49th. Beauty apps such as LooksMax AI and Umax are also new entrants, ranking 43rd and 44th respectively.
