Emily Stokes
My name is Emily Stokes, and I am a Journalism and Political Science student at Ohio University, working as a summer intern at the Ohio Supreme Court. This has been a truly transformative experience and a unique opportunity to explore and gain a deeper understanding of the Ohio judicial system. I'm glad I took the plunge and applied.
The 2024 Summer Intern class included both law and non-law students from Ohio and beyond, all eager to learn and engage with one another. Meeting people and exchanging friendly hellos throughout the courthouse made the experience even more enjoyable.
One of the things that helped me the most this summer was coming into each day with a willingness to try something new and a mindset of working hard. I was able to explore skills and tasks without the fear of failure, but with a willingness to try and grow. I asked a lot of questions that opened new doors into areas of interest and exploration. It may sound cliché, but you don't know what you don't know.
Another exciting part of being an intern is working in such a beautiful, historic building in the heart of Columbus. If you haven't already, be sure to take the time to explore the Thomas J. Moyer Ohio Judicial Center and the surrounding downtown district.
I left my time at the Supreme Court with a deeper understanding of the justice system, a portfolio of high-quality, impactful work, not to mention a growing network of new friends.
The Ohio Supreme Court works diligently behind the scenes to keep the wheels of justice turning, which is a reflection of a strong and committed judiciary working for the people.
I was able to contribute to the mission of sharing access to justice and the vital role of the justice system. I leave this university as a better writer, researcher, and communicator, and I am excited to bring what I learned back to campus and beyond.
