“Degree of Separation” by Jamin Carter Sponsored by: Regional Arts and Humanities Council, Inc. December 12th – January 20th
Precise, symbolic shapes and text, layered between paints and inks, poured or brushed, characterize my work. I seek a relationship between aggressive external forces and the stillness contained within practiced stillness. The paradox of symbols and language, both personal and public at the same time, is realized in a phrase with a double meaning, which includes a warning, instruction, and reproof: the phrase “don’t be gentle.” Audience interpretations often depend on social proximity to the message. This dialogue (between art and viewer) is reflected in the use of space and distance to describe the relative relationships between elements within the work. This process seeks to understand the contextual nature of meaning within a shared vocabulary packed with contradictory experiences. The use of an established set of motifs, combined with intuitive pouring, painting, and mark-making, cuts through the communication gaps of a burdened caste system to reveal a textured and ambiguous reality. It is a means to do so.
