The university will welcome families of current students to the grounds this weekend for its annual Family Weekend, during which the Orientation and New Student Program will host a series of events and programs, from drag shows to dome dinners, and will continue until Nov. 3. ONSP is a university office that organizes events aimed at supporting students build A sense of community. Haley Robbins, Class of 2023, recently joined her August Family Weekend event planning team as a Student Affairs Fellow. Robbins said having ONSP as the central hub for coordinating Family Weekend events will ease the planning process and allow for a wide range of events.
“[The ONSP] Families will now be able to customize their own personalized family weekend experience. ” Robbins said. “We want to provide all the resources that we have so that families can come and really enjoy their time with our students without having to worry about the weekend.”
Robbins explained that planning these events is a year-long effort in which ONSP coordinates with several other ground organizations. Organizations such as the athletics department, the Office of African American Affairs, and the Center for Contemplative Science are working with his ONSP to plan events.
The most popular family weekend event is Dome room dinner. This two-night event series invites students and their families to dinner, faculty lectures, and student performances in his dome room in the Rotunda.
Robbins said more than 2,000 families registered for the event, but only 200 will be selected for dinner through a random drawing system. Registration for this event is now closed, but all other Family Weekend events are accepting registration, and some events do not require registration at all.
Another increasingly popular event is the Family Weekend Tailgate, which will be held at O’Hill Field on Nov. 4 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sponsored in part by the athletics department, the tailgate will offer free food, college gear, and more to get students and families in the Cavalier spirit before the college football team takes on Georgia Tech at 2 p.m. A student DJ will be provided.
ONSP Program Coordinator Nathan Frizik He said he is excited to bring students and their families together in a fun tailgate atmosphere.
“Our students are excited to show families around and interact with them,” Freisig said. “As much as they enjoyed it, [the weekend], we really think so too. ”
For the Class of 2025, perhaps the biggest event is the junior year ceremony. mark Midway point in a current college senior’s career. This year’s ceremony will be held at the Paramount Theater on the Downtown Mall. This event is free and open to third grade students, their girlfriends, and their families.
Following the ceremony, a reception for the Class of 2025 will be held outdoors at the Downtown Mall starting at 1 p.m.
To give you an overview of the schedule, the kickoff Family Weekend event is Nov. 3 at 7 a.m. for an “intense” full-body workout at the Aquatic Fitness Center. The event continues throughout the day until the Weekend Choral Showcase at 8 p.m., featuring performances by student groups such as University Singers, Chamber Singers, the Virginia Glee Club, and the Virginia Women’s Choir.
The next day begins at 8am with an aerobic boot camp in the park. A total of 13 events will be held throughout the day, culminating with the Virginia Gentleman Family Weekend Concert from 8 to 10 p.m.
The schedule will be shortened on the final day, with events beginning at 9 a.m. with the Hillel Family Weekend Brunch at the Brody Jewish Center.
Family Weekend will feature many other unique events, including a drag show at the Newcomb Theater for all ages and a cooking class from the University Teaching Kitchen on Friday. There will be an impromptu Iwafman performance on Saturday from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., and a ballroom brunch will be held from 10 to 12 p.m. in Alumni Hall on Sunday.
There are also many events specific to students’ research fields. Students from each school and major have the opportunity to inform their families about the program at events such as Computer Science Major Night, College of Liberal Arts Faculty Reception, and Engineering Expo for current and prospective College of Engineering students.
