LADY LAKE, Fla. (TND) — The man, who was unfamiliar with Florida law, was arrested again by sheriff’s deputies who heard the man “load a gray backpack and run away behind a liquor store.”
It happened Monday afternoon at Walmart in The Villages.
According to the arrest report, a loss prevention officer showed a Sumter County Sheriff’s Office deputy the surveillance video and wrote:
The footage showed the defendant enter the store, grab a gray backpack and begin filling it with unpaid items from various departments within the store. ”
He then left, but then realized he was being followed and started running.
Shortly afterward, another deputy and a clerk found Jonathan Kirkland near a reservoir in the area.
The employee confirmed that Mr. Kirkland was “the one who completed the theft and got away from him.” The defendant was also in possession of stolen property. ”
The 10 stolen items, valued at $169.19, were recovered from the backpack.
Kirkland was then arrested and read a Miranda warning, but Kirkland was arrested, according to the arrest report.
The defendant was not interviewed because the defendant reiterated that he did not understand his rights. ”
He was charged with retail theft and resisting, and bail was set at $3,000.
Kirkland, 32, has heard Miranda warnings many times.
The arrest report listed a grand larceny conviction on January 10, 2010. It did not say where the conviction took place.
Kirkland has had problems in nearby Lake County in recent years. He has been arrested five times since the events of November 22, 2020, and was eventually released.
