Boone, North Carolina – App State 5th grade McCall Denny’s The 1,000th kill was the highlight of the Mountaineers’ four-set loss to Old Dominion on Friday, 3-1 (17-25, 25-15, 26-24, 25-22). Friday’s game was App State’s last home game of the 2023 season.

App State had 10 kills and ODU matched with 62 each in the dig category.
The Mountaineers got off to a strong start in the first set, going on a 5-0 run that included two aces from McBean and a kill from the freshman. Delaney Grevengaard And Winterhof. App State jumped to 12-5 on back-to-back kills from Winterhoff and Ambrose.Kills from Winterhof, Grevengaard, Junior lauren pleasureand new students Eva Leahy The Black and Gold led 18-11. A late 4-0 run brought App State to set point, but Denny had a kill and the Mountaineers took the set 25-17.
Denny reached his 1,000 kill in the second set, giving App State a 3-1 lead against ODU. The Monarchs gained momentum with a 6-0 run and took an 8-4 lead. ODU scored five more points in a row, increasing the lead to 13-6. App State chipped away at the lead with two aces from Roper and back-to-back kills from Leahy and Ambrose, cutting the lead to 13-10. ODU went on another 5-0 run to jump to 22-12. Despite two kills from Denny and Grevengaard, ODU took the second set 25-15.
McBean started the third set with App State’s ace. ODU quickly took an 11-8 lead. Denny’s consecutive kills brought App State to within one of him of the lead (11-10). In a close game between the Mountaineers and Monarchs, Ambrose’s three kills and Cruz’s ace gave App State a 17-15 lead. ODU tied the game at 17 points, but App State fought back with a 3-0 run that included a kill by Grevengaard and a block by Winterhoff/Grevengaard. Kills from Grevengaard and Denny gave App State a 22-19 lead. Old Dominion surged up 5-0 in the closing stages to reach set point. App State held the Monarchs to two set points with kills from Denny and Pleasure, but ODU took the set 26-24.
Leahy opened the Mountaineers’ fourth and final set with a kill. ODU steadily built up a 5-2 lead. Winterhoff had a kill to bring App State within two points of the Monarchs’ lead (6-4). ODU went on a 6-0 run to jump to 12-4. Two kills from Winterhoff, one kill from Leahy and a block from the duo brought App State back within two points (14-12). Three kills and an ODU error cut ODU’s lead to 22-19. A Denny kill and a Denny/Pleasure block kept Apps within two of him (23-21). Despite Denny’s last kill, ODU took the set with his 25-22 and he won the match 3-0.

The Mountaineers will travel to Statesboro, Georgia to take on Georgia Southern on November 3rd and 4th. Friday’s game is set for 6 p.m., and Saturday’s game is set for 1 p.m. Both can be streamed on ESPN+.
