HARRISVILLE — A woman was seriously injured after being hit by a motorist at a Harrisville Walmart gas station, according to Harrisville Mayor Michelle Tate.
“It’s pretty serious,” Tate said. Harrisville Assistant Police Chief Dennis Moore said the victim was in stable condition in the intensive care unit at McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden.
The incident late Thursday night resulted in the closure of the gas station and the adjacent Walmart, which was cordoned off with yellow police tape. A sign at the Walmart entrance warned customers that the store would be closed until 6 a.m. Friday.
“Thank you for your understanding. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause,” the sign said. Moore said Walmart officials made the decision to close the store.
Moore said the incident occurred around 11:45 a.m. Thursday as a gas station employee was cleaning the station’s above-ground fuel tank port. She had placed orange cones around her work area and was wearing a yellow safety vest, but a female customer coming out of the gas station didn’t notice her and ran her over.
Moore said there did not appear to be any malicious intent in the incident and the driver did not appear to be impaired. “We had all the ingredients we needed and it was just an unlucky situation,” he said.
He said there are no plans to file charges in the case given its coincidental nature, but the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities have not identified the victim or the driver.
