Every year, Día de Muertos is celebrated on November 2ndn.d.. It is a Mexican tradition of remembering and cherishing those who have passed away. Other Latin American countries also commemorate this day.
Families build altars with candles, flowers, and belongings of their loved ones. The person’s favorite food is also listed.
Events on the Central Coast will commemorate this tradition this weekend. The Latino Outreach Council is bringing back the free celebration at Mission Plaza in San Luis Obispo. This is the first time since the pandemic. The event will also include an altar and costume contest.
“Today is a day of celebration and we have great entertainment planned. We have a great mariachi band. They are actually very famous in Mexico and are called Mariachi Santa Cecilia.” CEO of the Latino Outreach Council, Jacqueline Frederick says:
The Dia de Los Muertos event at San Luis Obispo’s Mission Plaza will be held Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m.
“We also have folklorico dancers from Pioneer Valley School in Santa Maria and their beautiful costumes, and a DJ provided by Nexus Dance Studio,” Frederick added.
Another event taking place on Sunday is the Santa Maria Celebration of Death, which will be held from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Veterans Memorial Center in Santa Maria.
Mi Cultura Barbershop in Paso Robles will also be hosting a Día de Muertos event on Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. The event location is 609 12.th Street, Paso Robles.
