Gardaí urged people to be suspicious of apps offering “sales and discounts” that could introduce viruses to their phones, warning the public: “If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.”
One of the most common ways viruses enter smartphones is by downloading third-party apps. This puts your sensitive data, such as payment information, at risk of being stolen.
Since Google Play Store and Apple App Store offer many apps offering deals and discounts for online shopping, gardaí shared some tips to stay safe when it comes to mobile apps.

In a post on the Garda Info X page, a spokesperson said: “Be suspicious of apps offering deals and discounts. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.”
Gardaí also gave advice on how to spot dangerous apps that can infect your phone with viruses.
- Be suspicious of apps that offer deals and discounts. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
- Who is the app publisher? When was it published? If it’s recent and not updated, be suspicious.
- How many times has the app been downloaded and how many reviews has it had? If the number is small but all good or great, be suspicious.
- What are the app permissions? If you can download contacts, calls, messages, microphone, images, camera, etc. do you need all of this?
- Does the brand or seller have a website? Visit there and download the app from there instead. It’s probably safer.
