Billions of smartphone owners use their devices to play games. It’s a fun and usually low-cost hobby. However, gaming revenue is increasing. Nearly a quarter of game developers use in-app purchases, also known as “microtransactions,” to allow players to spend real-world currency on everything from new outfits for their avatars to extra lives. I am. The Better Business Bureau offers tips to help you understand and manage in-app purchases when playing mobile games.
How to make in-app purchases in mobile games
- Please note that some “free” apps may offer in-app purchases. While some gaming apps are technically free to play, you may not be able to fully enjoy the game without making in-app purchases. Games may set time limits on when a player’s lives are replenished or when they can access new levels or items unless they pay a small fee. The game may display advertisements unless you pay for the ad-free version. Apps may also offer cosmetic improvements for a fee. These “skins” improve the aesthetics of the game, but do not technically affect how the game is played. Some of these revenue-generating techniques are controversial, especially when targeting children.
- Check out paid apps with no in-app purchases. It may cost more upfront, but it’s usually cheaper in the long run because in-app purchases let you play forever without maxing out your credit card.
- Please research carefully before downloading an app. In some cases, even paid apps may offer in-app purchases while playing. App stores typically notify you upfront whether an app offers in-app purchases on its description page. However, do your research to find out how much game you can play without paying and how much the amount of in-app purchases will affect your (or your child’s) game play.
- Set a budget and stick to it. We recommend setting limits for yourself and your family when making in-app purchases while gaming. Games may use manipulative techniques to increase sales, especially when targeted at children. Setting a budget can prevent you and your family from falling into overspending traps.
- Talk to your child about in-app purchases and set expectations. Reduce stress for your family by setting clear expectations for handling in-app purchases. Figure out the gaming apps they want to use and let them know upfront if they allow in-app purchases. Make sure your child understands if and when they can make a purchase and any restrictions on its use.
- Adjust your mobile device settings to prevent unnecessary in-app purchases. You can restrict your child’s in-app purchases by disabling in-app purchases or requiring a password for approval. How you change your in-app purchase settings depends on whether you’re using an Apple or Android device. These settings are a great way to control who can make in-app purchases.
