Remember when Walmart wasn’t in Washington state?
The funny thing is, when they decided to come to Washington state, Walmart wasn’t a popular option. When I was a young man in my small town of Clarkston, Washington, I remember everyone worrying about their jobs and the impact Walmart was having on the community.
It’s funny, my son says that Walmart is basically where he hangs out in Clarkston, Washington now, and that the town is thriving because of Walmart and Costco.
But did you know that Walmart’s first foray into Washington state wasn’t in Seattle or Spokane?
Surprisingly, the small town of Ormack has the distinction of being home to Washington State’s first Walmart. The store was built by 1993 in a certain town 4,000 residents.
As you can see, this was an instant success product 200 New jobs were created, making the company Omak’s largest employer for many years.
It may seem like Walmart has always had a presence in Washington state, but surprisingly, it’s only been 30 years since the first Walmart broke ground in Omak, and as the saying goes,… has become history.
