(KRON) — Antioch Police Department issued a press release Thursday regarding an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Oct. 1. Daniel Mackin, a 30-year-old Antioch man, was shot and survived the shooting.
According to police, the incident began around 7:41 a.m. when Antioch social services workers encountered two vehicles suspected of being involved in a recent robbery in the 200 block of West 3rd Street. Police said two APD officers responded and one saw Mackin sleeping inside the stolen van with a gun in his hand.
APD said Mackin woke up after hearing the officers’ voices, but did not comply with commands. He drove the van away from the carport and stopped on a nearby grassy sidewalk.
Police said Mackin still ignored officers’ commands, grabbed a gun and jumped out of the van. The officers gave chase, and police say Mackin turned around and pointed a gun at them. That’s when a police officer opened fire on him, hitting him several times.
Officers Thomas Borg, Dustin Dibble, Sean Marquez and Kyle Armstrong were placed on paid administrative leave. Police have not released body camera footage of the shooting.
Police said Mackin had a warrant out for his arrest in connection with the murder. He was on community supervision after his release from a felony conviction.
After recovering from his injuries, he was booked into jail on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm, receiving a stolen vehicle, resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer with a deadly weapon.
The Antioch Police Department has been embroiled in a scandal involving racist text messages sent and received by numerous officers within the department. As many as 45 police officers were placed on leave.
