MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – Bail was set at $300,000 in court Wednesday for a man accused of stabbing an employee at a Sun Prairie Walmart.
Miguel A. Barajas Ceballos, 22, appeared for a preliminary hearing on charges of attempted first-degree intentional homicide and fleeing and eluding the operator of a vehicle.
Prosecutors argued that Miguel A. Barajas Ceballos’ bail should be set at $500,000, noting that he took the knife used in the stabbing from his home and that the attack was planned. did.
Barajas Ceballos’ lawyer argued that his client is unemployed, lives with his family and has no criminal history. The attorney said he believes $5,000 or $10,000 is sufficient in this case.
“Having reviewed the criminal complaint, this allegation is almost the most serious criminal charge,” Court Administrator Callie Cattanach said before deciding to set bail at $300,000. “The injuries and acts described, which resulted in multiple penetrating wounds to the victim’s body, appear to be a random attack at Walmart, but in the case of medical intervention, the most serious charges could be considered. Fortunately, we are not.”
Barajas Ceballos’ lawyer also told the court that the suspect has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and asked Catanach to order a competency test. A competency hearing is scheduled for Nov. 6, according to court records.
Once Barajas-Ceballos posts bail, he will not be allowed to possess any type of weapon or be at the Walmart in Sun Prairie.
Lt. Ryan Cox of the Sun Prairie Police Department said Tuesday that the victim was in stable but critical condition at a local hospital. A surgeon told police the victim had sustained more than a dozen stab wounds on multiple parts of his body, according to the criminal complaint.
In a criminal complaint, the victim told officers that he was walking down the main aisle of the store on the night of Oct. 16 when the suspect came out of a side aisle and immediately stabbed him. . The victim said he attempted to fight back and was able to push the suspect into a shelf, whereupon the suspect fled.
Police arrested the suspect after a high-speed chase that ended in Madison. Police later found a bloody knife on the passenger side floorboard of the suspect’s vehicle, according to the complaint.
