SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. (WKOW) — A Sun Prairie man who police say stabbed someone at Walmart was arrested late Monday night, leading police on a high-speed chase.
Officers were called to the Walmart Supercenter on McCoy Road at approximately 10:17 p.m. for a report of a stabbing inside the store, said Lt. Ryan Cox of the Sun Prairie Police Department.
Cox said officers were able to identify the suspect’s vehicle while responding to the scene.
Emergency services found a 36-year-old man with injuries and took him to hospital. Although he is in critical condition, his condition was announced as stable.
Police said the man was stabbed at least five times. The victim suffered serious injuries, but his condition is said to be stable.
Meanwhile, officers were actively searching for the suspect, Miguel Ángel Barajas Ceballos. They spotted the 22-year-old man’s car and tried to pull over, but the man sped away at a high rate of speed.
Police from multiple agencies pursued Barajas-Ceballos and deployed spike strips. His car hit a spike and crashed at East Washington Avenue and Brealey Street in Madison, hitting another car that was not involved.
Barajas-Ceballos was arrested by 10:26 p.m., less than 10 minutes after officers arrived after receiving the initial call, according to a press release. He was taken to the Dane County Jail.
Lt. Cox said investigators do not believe the two knew each other.
Walmart released a statement saying, “This kind of violence is unacceptable. We are disgusted by what happened at our Sun Prairie store.”
“We join our employees in wishing for a healthy recovery,” the statement continued. “We will continue to work closely with local law enforcement throughout the investigation.”
