FC Barcelona announced the transfer shortly after discovering their Champions League opponents for the 2024/2025 season.
“FC Barcelona and FC Porto have reached an agreement for the transfer of Ángel Alarcón,” read a statement sent to media personnel.
“The club will retain 50% of any future sale of the player. FC Barcelona would like to publicly thank Ángel Alarcón for his commitment and dedication and wish him every luck and success in the future, both personally and professionally,” it added.
Barcelona announced on their website how Alarcon had moved from rivals Espanyol's youth academy to the club and play at La Masia.
He was promoted to the U-18 team earlier than expected in the 2020/2021 season and also made his debut for Barça Atlétic's reserve team (then called Barça B) during the same period.
Unfortunately, in the final game of the season in which the now 20-year-old Alarcón made great strides, he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament during the Catalan league semi-final, meaning he will miss the entire 2021/2022 season.
However, in the 2022/2023 season, Alarcón made his first-team debut in a Copa del Rey away game against Cueta, but injuries continued to stop him on his trajectory.
Alacorn made a total of four appearances for the first team under now-sacked manager Xavi Hernandez and made 12 appearances for Barca Atlétic under also-departed manager Rafa Marquez in the 2023/2024 season.
A move to Porto could be a huge success for the forward and his career, as the Portuguese team is one of Europe's best at developing young talent.
Heading West Dragon The decision certainly did not hurt another La Masia product, Nico Gonzalez, who signed a five-year contract with the Primeira Liga giants last summer for a reported $9.4 million (€8.5 million).
Nico initially struggled with some early problems but is now a regular starter in midfield for Porto and scored a goal inside the half-hour in a 2-0 win over Rio Ave last weekend.
Niko's contract is set to include a buy-back clause and a similar arrangement like Alarcón's is unlikely, but Barca still retain 50% of Niko's rights, which could prove to be a shrewd move if he fulfils his potential elsewhere on the Iberian peninsula.
