New app connects residents with law enforcement resources in Yuba County
So is retail theft. Yuba County residents also have a new app available that you can download right now. The YCSO Sheriff app gives you the latest updates, including evacuation orders and warnings. You can also submit tips and a lot of other things. Joining me this morning to tell us more about how this new app works is Katie Goodson, Public Information Officer for the Sheriff's Department. Thank you for having me. We really appreciate it. Thank you for having me. We're really excited. I know a lot of agencies are starting to turn to apps because the national statistics that you guys use say that nine out of 10 people have a cell phone. That's right. It's important that everyone has their smart device on hand and they have that information available. That was our hope. That was the hope. So you worked with the company for about a year and a half to figure out what the people of Yuba County want to know from the police in general? So what was the biggest thing that you figured out? One of the main things is people searching for inmates. They want to know who's incarcerated. Evacuation notifications are huge. You know, we're in a wildfire area, unfortunately. So we get evacuation information very quickly, we get different types of alerts. Luckily, our community has been very cooperative and very connected with the sheriff's office. So, so far, people have been very excited about it. They can also reach out to school resource officers. That's one of the things that we felt was really important in the discussions. We want kids who are in school to have someone they can reach out to very quickly and easily. And, as we all know, teenagers have cell phones, so we wanted to be able to take advantage of that. And, yes, with the click of a button, they can message their school resource officer and answer questions. They can answer questions, submit tips, all kinds of things, without ever being seen. I think maybe it's an interesting value to get closer to that person. Right. Yeah, those are just a few of the many things that we thought of. I think we can offer our community, our kids, our parents, anything that we can do to connect with our community. So, what else do you hope people will like? It's always good to explore the app and figure out what you can do with it. But what are some other things that we hope people will like? You know, we want to put some things up. It's still early days, so there's more to add, but we're going to add a lot of photos, photos of different people. We want people to know who our sheriff is, who our deputies are, and feel free to talk to us. So photos are really important. But again, we just want to have information about upcoming events, what's going on in our community, what we're involved with. So we want to make that connection quickly and efficiently. And that's what the app is good at. And I think it's important to get that out there. It's not just all the negative stuff, like criminals and stuff, but the positive stuff. And that's a good thing. So if you have an opportunity to highlight the good work that we're doing, the arrests, the different events, the community service that we're doing, our citizen academy classes, our neighborhood watch meetings, you know, do that. All of those things that people want to know about. Now we have that information more accessible to them. Which is great. It's already available for Apple customers. And the Android version will be coming in the next few days. Hopefully it'll be coming soon. So stay tuned. App users can download it right now from YCSO. That's where you look in the App Store, right? YCSO is the Yuba County Sheriff's Office app, and it's free, I think. It's free.
