Google has announced two significant upgrades to its Gemini app, expanding its capabilities with advanced artificial intelligence (AI) tools. The announcements, made on Wednesday, introduced new AI agents, “Gems,” and the integration of the Imagen 3 image generation model. These enhancements were first previewed at Google I/O earlier this year.
Gemstone: Advanced AI Chatbot Features
Gemini's new feature, Gems, represents a notable advancement in AI chatbot technology. The tool allows users to create specialized versions of chatbots for specific topics or tasks. These mini chatbots with limited datasets are designed to provide more accurate and relevant responses.
Elaborating on the benefits of Gems, Google said, “With Gems, you can create a team of experts to help you think through a tough project, brainstorm ideas for an upcoming event, or craft the perfect caption for a social media post.” Gems can be customized with specific instructions for greater effectiveness. Users have access to a range of pre-built Gems, including roles such as learning coach, brainstormer, career guide, writing editor, coding partner, and more. This feature is available to paid users, including those subscribing to Gemini Advanced, Business, and Enterprise levels.

Image 3: State-of-the-art image generation
Google's latest image generation AI tool, Imagen 3 model, is set to be integrated into the Gemini app, providing users with enhanced capabilities for image creation. Imagen 3 can generate visuals in a variety of styles, including Nikon DSLR, GoPro, and wide-angle lenses. The tool is designed to generate a wide range of outputs, including photorealistic landscapes, textured oil paintings, and whimsical clay animation scenes.
A notable upgrade in Imagen 3 is the ability to generate images of people, a feature that was previously removed due to concerns that it could generate biased or harmful content. To address these issues, Google has implemented safeguards to mitigate the risk of deepfakes and introduced SynthID, which watermarks AI-generated images.
Access and Restrictions
The Imagen 3 feature will be rolled out to all Gemini users, including free users, but may be subject to certain limitations compared to paid users. The company hinted at the possibility of inline editing of generated images using text prompts, but specific details of this feature were not provided. Importantly, Google stated that Imagen 3 does not support the generation of graphic, identifiable individuals, depictions of minors, or excessively cruel, violent, or sexual content.
These updates to the Gemini app are expected to provide advanced tools for both communication and creative tasks, improving the user experience.
