Baltimore (WBFF) — Rev. PM Smith, a lifelong Baltimore resident, sat down with Megan Gilliland on Wednesday's Fox45 Morning News to discuss the biggest stories across Baltimore and how they impact the communities who live there.
This week marked the return of many students across Baltimore City to school and the beginning of Dr. Sonia Santelis' ninth year as city schools superintendent. In a recent interview with Project Baltimore, Dr. Santelis shared a message of optimism heading into the new school year. Smith struck a different tone.
“Because the same old policies will be in place,” Smith said. “I'm praying for the best for the new school year, but I'm not hopeful.”
Smith also spoke out against the weekend street occupations that were thwarted by police, saying organizers of similar events have used social media to rally crowds, sometimes drawing in numbers that police are unable to respond to quickly enough, leading to prolonged and dangerous situations.
“Police and other law enforcement agencies are outnumbered and overwhelmed,” Smith said. “They have to use technology — cameras and drones — to get license plates and tow cars.”
Smith also commented on the recent criminal trials underway in Baltimore, specifically that of Jason Billingsley, and you can hear that conversation in full in the interview above.
