Special Report to ECOSOC: World Social Report 2024, 31 July 2024
During a special briefing for Member States held on July 31, 2024, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am (Eastern Standard Time) in the ECOSOC Conference Room, UNDESA stated: World Social Report 2024: Social development in a time of overlapping crises: a global call for actionSince the first World Summit for Social Development in Copenhagen in 1995, progress has been made around the world towards realizing social development goals such as poverty eradication, full employment and inclusion. However, even just five years ago, many gaps and challenges remained. Today, amid a confluence of shocks and crises, less than one-fifth of SDG targets are on track, almost half have shown insufficient progress, and more than one-third have stagnated or regressed. This serves as a wake-up call and indicates that significant changes are needed on multiple fronts to achieve social development. National-level efforts towards achieving social goals remain important, but must be complemented by international support and global action. Such collective action can significantly reduce the impact of recurrent crises on social development and preserve precious resources for further advancement in social development.
