In the third beta of iOS 18.1, Apple has introduced a new Apple Intelligence feature for notifications. The notification summary option, previously available in the Mail and Messages apps, is now available across all apps.
Updating to the latest beta version will launch an Apple Intelligence setup flow that introduces some new features, including settings for the “Notification Previews Overview” section.
During setup, you can choose to summarize all notification previews or choose which apps should use the summary feature. After setup, these settings can be adjusted in the Settings app under the “Notifications” heading, under “Preview Summary.”
Notification summaries allow Apple Intelligence to gather important details from a group of notifications from your apps and summarize them succinctly so you can see your most important notifications at a glance. From the Settings app:
We summarize the content of your direct messages and notification groups to make them more concise and easier to read. The accuracy of summaries may vary depending on the content.
There are separate toggles to enable or disable summaries for each app, and you can also disable the feature completely if you don't use it.
The lock screen displays a summary of your notifications, which works well in combination with the new interruption-reducing Focus Mode.
Like other Apple Intelligence features, notification summaries require a device capable of running Apple Intelligence, namely an iPhone 15 Pro model, or an iPad or Mac with an M-series chip. The feature is currently limited to developers who have installed the third beta of iOS 18.1, but Apple Intelligence is expected to be available to the public later this year.
Today's beta also adds a Clean Up object removal tool to the Photos app.
