A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Tuesday to celebrate the reopening of the Huey Learning Center in Wichita Falls.
The Huey Learning Center, located next to Scotland Park Elementary School, was destroyed in a severe storm more than a year ago.
“About a year ago we had a microburst that hit town and lifted roofs off of buildings and dropped them onto buildings. It really wreaked havoc and destroyed buildings,” said Keri Goins, executive director of Child Care Partners.
“We were able to salvage some things from the building that was opened at another facility last year, but it took us a full year to pay the insurance and get the building back to normal,” she said.
The centre is older than Scotland Park Primary School and has been a second home to Scotland Park children for over 40 years.
Although the children were initially saddened to find out what had happened, their teachers were grateful that it had happened in the evening.
“The next day, when they came, the kids were crying,” Goins said. “The teachers were really scared. If something like that had happened in the daytime … they were really thankful it happened in the evening.”
The Huey Learning Center is almost complete, but unfortunately, in the end, insurance wasn't able to cover it all.
The center still needs smaller items, including toys for children. Those who would like to donate can visit the “Help Huey” wish list on Amazon or visit the website at childcarewf.org.
