It has been pointed out that: 9to5MacApple recently launched the ability for Hawaii residents to add a digital version of their driver's license or state-issued ID to the Wallet app on iPhone and Apple Watch, allowing them to conveniently present their ID or proof of age in a contactless way at select airports, businesses and venues.
Hawaii is now the seventh U.S. state to support this feature, joining Arizona, Maryland, Colorado, Georgia, Ohio, and most recently, California.
To add a driver's license or state ID to the Wallet app, tap the plus sign in the top-right corner, select your driver's license or state ID, and follow the on-screen instructions. Hawaii isn't yet available as an option for all iPhone users.
Apple first announced the feature in September 2021, but the rollout has been slow and Digital IDs are only available in limited locations.
For example, the ID can be used at certain TSA checkpoints in certain airports in the United States.
- Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI)
- Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA)
- Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX)
- Denver International Airport (DEN)
- Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL)
- Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport (CVG)
- John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH)
Apple says travelers should look at signs at TSA checkpoints to see if the feature is available, and the TSA's website provides more information.
According to Apple's website, the Wallet app's digital ID can also be used to prove age and identity at “certain bars, concerts, festivals, and more,” though the company didn't name any specific locations and it's far from widespread.
In a press release earlier this month, Apple reiterated that iPhone users “do not need to unlock, show or hand over their device to provide identification.”
In 2022, Apple said six additional states would “soon” allow residents to add their driver's license or state ID to the Wallet app, but more than two years later, none of these states still support the feature.
The six states are:
- Connecticut
- Iowa
- Kentucky
- Mississippi
- Oklahoma
- Utah
Apple has a page on their website with more information about Digital IDs.
