On August 12, 2024 at 9:00 AM, Senator Derek Murrow spoke at the Mayor’s REAL Task Force Education Subcommittee meeting held at Savannah Classical Academy.
Dr. Logan, the Committee Chair, introduced Senator Murrow's background: Senator Murrow is a Savannah native and graduate of Jenkins High School and Asbury University where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Leadership and Pastoral Ministry and a Master's Degree in Public Administration from Savannah State University.
Murrow delivered an entertaining and very informative presentation on how the education lottery system began in Georgia and where it currently sits in terms of education funding. The Education Subcommittee has a strong interest in making Pre-K available to all 4-year-olds and detailed the launch of a sports betting bill to make Pre-K slots available in all elementary schools. The committee does not want to see Pre-K students turned away (which is what is currently happening under the current lottery system).
The meeting ended with questions and important comments on how the Education Subcommittee can impact this hard-hitting and urgent gambling bill writing process. The committee is comprised of the following members: Dr. Otis Johnson (Founder), Lizann Roberts (Administrator), Mechelle Carey, Dr. Connie Cooper, Laura Shelton Council, Sheri Dean, Dr. Clark DeRiso, Dr. Anissa Rowland, Dr. Joseph Silver, Dr. Cora Thompson, Aria Hicks, Principal Barry Loris, Dr. Mackenzie Carey, and Molly Lieberman.
