When Apple and other companies release videos shot with an iPhone, they often stretch the definition of the term, attaching the iPhone to a rig that includes fancy external lenses, cinematic dollies, super expensive lighting, and other kit that's beyond the reach of the average user.
But tech commentator Faruk showed off what can be achieved using just the standard camera app, without any extra lenses, gimbals or filters…
The three-minute video is essentially a showreel of his best shots from the year, and perhaps to underscore the value of practice making perfect, Falk says the video was compiled from over 1,000 shots taken during that period.
Filmed on an iPhone 15 Pro Max. No gimbals, additional lenses or filters were used. All footage was shot in ProRes format onto an external drive using the stock camera app. Edited in Final Cut Pro X. This video is compiled from over 1000 video clips filmed between September 2023 and August 2024.
The only feature he added to his phone is an external drive, a necessity because he shot in Apple's storage-hungry ProRes format, which offers a lot of leeway for color grading, with ProRes 4444 XQ supported as the highest quality.
Apple ProRes 4444 XQ is the highest quality version of Apple ProRes for 4:4:4:4 image sources (including alpha channels). The format has an extremely high data rate to preserve the high dynamic range image detail produced by today's highest quality digital image sensors. Apple ProRes 4444 XQ preserves a dynamic range several times greater than that of Rec. 709 images, even under the rigors of extreme visual effects processing where the blacks or highlights of the tone scale are significantly stretched. Like standard Apple ProRes 4444, the codec supports up to 12 bits per image channel and up to 16 bits for the alpha channel. Apple ProRes 4444 XQ has a target data rate of approximately 500 Mbps for 4:4:4 sources at 1920×1080 and 29.97 fps.
The video is narrated by actor and comedian Jim Carrey, who gave a commencement speech in 2014.
