Summer is a time for fun and relaxation, which is why you'd expect more app downloads. However, a recent report from Appfigures' App Intelligence found that downloads were down globally in July.
Instagram maintained its lead in worldwide installs, continuing to hold the number one spot with an astounding 61 million downloads across the App Store and Play Store – a repeat of last month's performance.
In second place was TikTok with 51 million downloads, slightly down from June, with most of the decline coming from the App Store, while Google Play wasn't hit as hard.
Rounding out the top five were Facebook, Temu, and WhatsApp. All saw a slight drop in downloads from the previous month, but most maintained the trend. It's worth noting that Temu is a new contender on the list, seeing a 30% spike in downloads, breaking into the top five with 11 million installs in July.
July was a milestone month for Temu, which never saw such a positive response before, finishing the month with a new record of 38 million downloads on both the App Store and the Play Store. Experts say this is all thanks to Brazil, one of the largest regions for Google Play and where the app has seen a surge in popularity since its launch in June.
Brazil wants Temu no matter what, which makes sense given its popularity in the US and elsewhere. In other news, apps like Telegram and CapCut couldn't withstand the pressure, dropping in the rankings, while Threads and Snapchat performed in the opposite way when it comes to downloads.
Overall, the estimated number of downloads across the top 10 platforms reached 352 million across both the App Store and Google Play, a slight decrease compared to previous findings.
We took another deep dive into App Intelligence to see which apps generated the most revenue this July. Overall, revenue increased 11% in July, bringing us closer to our goal of reaching 1 billion in total revenue.
As for which app made the most, it was TikTok, which ended the month with an astounding $221 million, estimated to be nearly 20% more than in June.
YouTube revenue increased 11% to end July at $150 million. Rounding out the top five were Disney Plus, Max and Tinder, which were the highest-grossing apps last month.
This list is the exact same as the one we saw back in June, except that one of the 10 apps is different from the one we saw back in June: the Peacock app, which replaces Hulu.
The app believes it owes the Olympics a debt of gratitude for the huge revenue generated by this major sporting event: It estimates that it made nearly $40 million in revenue last month, a significant increase from June, when revenue hit the $32 million mark.
While we give credit to the Olympics, Peacock has also made great strides in the past year.
Overall, in our list of the top 10 highest-earning platforms, both the App Store and Play Store combined generated a massive $880 million in revenue.
