KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) – The family of the victim shot and killed outside a Walmart are seeking an explanation. Ronald Barnett, 71, was killed at the Northland Walmart on August 21st around 4:30pm.
Former KCPD officer Takiza Johnson is charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with his death.
Barnett's daughter, Elizabeth Moon, told KCTV5 it doesn't seem real.
“It's horrible. The house is quiet,” Moon said. “It makes me angry. I can't believe an ex-cop would do something like this to an innocent person who wouldn't even hurt a fly.”
Burnett has lived with Moon and her family for over 10 years, and the past few years haven't been easy.
“He had kidney cancer and had part of his kidney removed,” Moon said, “but just two weeks ago he returned to the hospital and was diagnosed with cancer-free.”
A fresh start, another chance at life, taken away in an instant.
“I don't think he deserves mercy,” Moon said when asked what justice would look like. “He shot his father and went home.”
Moon said her father was funny, family-oriented and trustworthy.
“It's unfortunate that it happened and that he had to go the way he did,” Moon said.
Johnson has pleaded not guilty. He is scheduled to appear again in court on Sept. 3 for a bail hearing.
