The Cheyney Education Association ratified the agreement with the Cheyney School District on Monday with 94% approval. It now must be approved by the Cheyney School Board.
CHENEY, Wash. — The Cheney Education Association (CEA) reached a tentative agreement and approved a new contract with Cheney Public Schools (CPS) on Monday, officially averting a potential strike.
The announcement of the tentative agreement was made by CEA and CPS late Friday night.
“We worked hard to ensure our members' priorities were addressed through negotiations,” said Cheyney Education Association President Melisse Lemelin.
The CEA met on Monday, August 26th, where members heard details of the tentative agreement and voted to ratify. CEA members approved the new contract with a 94% vote in favor.
“Educators here at Cheyney are receiving the support they need through a collective bargaining agreement that is fair and supports the teachers and students who are part of the Cheyney community,” Lemelin said.
The contract approved by the Cheyney School District states that teacher salaries will be increased by 18% over the next three years, including a 7.2% increase in year one, 5% in year two and 5.8% in year three.
CPS released the following statement in an email sent to CPS families, staff and community members:
“I'm pleased to announce that the Cheyney Education Association and its members approved a tentative agreement with the school district this afternoon. I appreciate the hard work of both negotiating teams to reach an agreement. The 2024-2025 school year will begin as scheduled.”
