Great Value apple juice bottles sold by Walmart in 25 states have been recalled by the manufacturer.
The affected products were not distributed in Oklahoma, according to the Food and Drug Administration.
The FDA reported that Great Value 8-ounce bottles of apple juice (sold in packs of six) contained inorganic arsenic in excess of acceptable levels. The manufacturer, Refresco Beverages US Inc., has initiated a voluntary recall.
According to the FDA classification, the contaminated products “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health effects.” Serious health effects are considered unlikely.
According to the FDA, there are several ways that arsenic can get into food: plants and animals can absorb it during their natural life cycle, or it can become contaminated during manufacturing processes. For inorganic arsenic, the most common source of high levels of arsenic is contaminated drinking water.
Exposure to high levels of arsenic can cause adverse effects on the nervous system in children, and long-term exposure in adults can cause skin diseases, certain cancers, and cardiovascular disease.
