Keeping up with the ever-expanding world of consumer AI products is a dynamic, fast-moving job, whether you're building new time-saving workflows, exploring real-world uses, or trying out a new creative stack. But amid the constant onslaught of product launches, investment announcements, and hyped features, it's worth asking questions: Which of these AI apps are actually being used? Which actions and categories are gaining popularity among consumers? And which AI apps are people stopping and then starting to use again?
Welcome to our third installment of the “Top 100 Gen AI Consumer Apps.”
Every six months, we dig deeper into the data to rank the top 50 AI-first web products. Monthly unique visitors) and the Top 50 AI-First Mobile Apps ( Monthly active usersAt this time, Approximately 30% of companies were new entrantsCompared to the previous report in March 2024;
But beyond the logo-filled interest of these rankings, the data reveals notable trends around new and expanding categories, emerging competitors, and engagement patterns. Here are some of the key takeaways that stood out to us: of The magic of creative tools They continue to attract consumers: 52% of the companies on the Web list are focused on creating or editing content in various formats, including images, video, music, and audio. Of the 12 new entrants, 58% are in the creative tools space.
This includes four of the top five who are on the list in ranked order for the first time. Ruma (#14) Vigle (#twenty one), Sea Art (#29), and audio (#33). And the biggest leap in the last six months has been the music generator. Snowrose from 36th to 5th place. In previous lists, the majority of content generation tools were focused on images. Over the past six months, other modalities have been gaining momentum. Image generation only accounts for 41% of the top content generation sites. And of the five generation tools that made it onto the list for the first time, Sea ArtIn the video, three new participants were seen (Ruma, Vigleand Vidnos) And the music saw one (audio) — Both methods have seen tremendous improvements in output quality over the past year.
What about mobile? Image and video content editing is the most common use case. It accounts for 22% of list creators and is the second largest product category in the mobile rankings. Users are keen to edit content on their phones. Startups have emerged here as well, but many of the new entrants at the top of the list are traditional creative tools that have pivoted to become AI-first generative tools. Meitu (#9), snow (#30), and Adobe Express (No. 35).
This is the third time, Chat GPT It's the number one product on web and mobile by a wide margin, but the competition to be the best consumer assistant is fierce.Confusion is currently number 3 on the web. The AI-powered search engine focuses on providing concise, real-time, accurate answers to queries complete with citations. Similarweb data shows that Perplexity has a slightly higher visit duration than ChatGPT (7+ minutes), suggesting high user engagement. Perplexity also made it into the mobile Top 50 list for the first time.
Anthropic Claudeis a direct competitor to ChatGPT, having risen from #10 in our last ranking to enter the top 5 on the web. The company recently released Artifacts, a direct competitor to ChatGPT's GPT.
AI assistants on mobile Luzia The company made its first appearance in 25th place. Claims It has 45 million users worldwide, mostly Spanish speaking. First released It started as a WhatsApp-based chatbot but launched a standalone mobile app in December 2023. TikTok's parent company, Bytedance, is focused on web-based AI products, with three of its apps making their debut on our list: Educational Technology Platform Gaut (#44) Bot Builder COZE (#45), and General Assistant Dubao (No. 47). Dubao It also made it onto the mobile list for the first time, ranking 26th.
Alongside Doubao, photo and video editing app Hypic (#19) and assistant app Cici (#34) are also Bytedance products, taking a combined total of six places on both lists. This includes apps targeting different geographic markets. On mobile, Cici is the English version of the Chinese version of Doubao.
Why is there such a surge in new entrants? Bytedance Release In late 2023, it founded Flow, a research and development division focused on generative AI applications, and has since launched new AI applications under other company names in the U.S. (and overseas). Early 2024.
On both web and mobile, there was only one new category: beauty and dating, which included three new entrants. Luxmax AI (#43), UMAX (#44), and The Ritz (#49), all ranked on the mobile list.LooksMax and Umax take a user's photos, rate them, and offer “tips” to make them more attractive. Umax also generates photos that show users how they look on a 10/10 scale, while LooksMax analyzes attractiveness from users' voices. On the app's onboarding screens, LooksMax claims over 2 million users, while Umax claims 1 million.
Both apps make money through subscriptions to unlock results: Umax costs $4.99 per week (or invite three friends), LooksMax costs $3.99 per week.
RIZZ, on the other hand, focuses on leveling up messaging in dating apps: users can upload screenshots of conversations and their profiles to get suggestions on what to say, and messages can be copied directly from RIZZ to the dating app. Discord traffic is often a leading indicator of apps climbing the web and mobile rankings, especially in content generation.
Some products launch on Discord to test their product in a “sandbox” while building a community, but then launch a website and primarily migrate off of Discord. These products “graduate” from the top ranks on Discord (one prime example is Snow(It was #31 in Discord traffic on the previous list, but this time it did not appear in Discord's top 100 servers).
Other companies continue to use Discord heavily even after launching standalone products. On the roadFor example, we maintained the number one ranking for invite traffic. all Discord server.
As of July, there were 10 AI companies ranked in the top 100 of all Discord servers by invite traffic. Compared to January, half of these were new entrants.
Half of the top 10 Discord servers allow users to actually generate content within Discord, often through a paid subscription, while the other half use Discord for community building, customer support, and sharing resources.
