World Social Justice Day, celebrated every year on February 20, aims to provide a platform to speak out against injustice around the world. It also connects different communities around the world to a common ground.
As this year marks the 17th World Social Justice Day, let’s take a closer look at its history, significance, and themes.
World Social Justice Day 2024: History and Significance
The history of World Social Justice Day dates back to 1995, when the Copenhagen Summit for the Cause of Social Development was held in Denmark. The summit subsequently produced the Copenhagen Declaration and Plan of Action, which seeks to end worrying problems such as poverty, unemployment and discrimination in society.
More than 100 political leaders attended the summit, pledging to confront the causes of injustice and work for a stable and secure society.
This day promotes raising voices against social injustice and breaking down barriers related to gender, race, inequality and religious discrimination. The day also highlighted solutions and pathways to improve the situation.
Social justice includes several economic, political, and social rights. It brings access to better education and health care, better employment opportunities and social protection.
World Social Justice Day 2024: Theme
