MACON, Ga. — A man was shot in the leg in the Harrison Road Walmart parking lot in west Macon, according to a press release from the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.
Police say a man was sitting in his car around 6:20 p.m. Friday when a man, whom the sheriff’s office believes to be 21-year-old Jaquan Doderick Andrews, approached him.
Andrews approached the victim and attempted to get into his vehicle, according to the press release.
The driver then attempted to flee. As the driver started driving, Andrews fired a shot, hitting the driver in the leg and going through the passenger window, the sheriff’s office said.
The driver then continued driving, going around the back of the Walmart and heading toward the lower entrance. He then allegedly ran inside to get help.
The driver was taken to Atrium Navicent Health in stable condition, the sheriff’s office said.
Andrews was arrested “soon after” in the Dollar Tree parking lot across from the Walmart parking lot, according to a press release.
Andrews was charged with aggravated assault and is being held without bail, the sheriff’s office said.
At the Harrison Road Walmart, attorneys Katherine MacArthur and Jessica Edmonds, who represented a man killed in a similar carjacking, have investigated the store’s high rate of crime, with 30 cases reported at the Walmart in two years. He said more violent crimes were occurring.
Lawyers are representing the family of Ronnie Alvear, who was killed in a parking lot in August 2022.
The sheriff’s office accused Elisia Dwayne Gray of trying to steal Alvear’s car and then shooting him.
Gray was arrested in April 2023. He is charged with murder and is being held in the Bibb County Jail without bail.
Walmart sent 13WMAZ the following statement after the lawsuit:
“We extend our condolences to Mr. Alvear’s family and friends on the loss of their lives. The safety and security of our customers and employees is always our top priority and we have a process in place to evaluate the security of our stores. We do not disclose our security measures publicly because they may be less effective. We regularly maintain staffing, training, procedures, and technology designed to provide a safe working and shopping experience. We will continue our long-standing practice of evaluating each company based on its own criteria.”
