Las Vegas (KLAS) – Thanks to a program called “Voice In Voting,” hundreds of elementary and middle school students from across the state recently joined a giant Zoom call in preparation for the 2023 “Kidsvention.”
Guest speaker Poonam Mathur created new words for the students.
“Think of Nevada, where young people thrive! And maybe it will be NEW-vada. Oooh! Can you see it?
Kidsvention aims to “empower young people” by holding debates between high school students and state legislators and allowing young students to vote for or against questions such as whether the United States should require 18-year-olds to register to vote. It embodies the Voices In Voting slogan, “Give people the power of democracy and inspire democracy.” (I said you should).
After multiple discussions about the possibility of changing start times for public school students, more Kidsvention voters said start times should be changed.
There was a music intermission and the Del Webb Middle School Concert Choir sang “Let Freedom Ring” by the late George Dare.
And once upon a time, there was a final, and perhaps even more important, discussion. All grades Is there a “break time” during class?
State Sen. Melanie Schaible of Las Vegas:
“I think recess is a very important part of not only the school day, but also the work day. There are days when I have lunch there, but those days are not as good as the days when I have a day off.”
Foothill High School student Vivian Schell said no.
“Recess is fun and beneficial for elementary school students, but most middle school and high school students want to go home 30 minutes early.”
So what did Kidsventioneers say?
Students voted 97-13 that recess was a good idea.
I really enjoy interacting with the student debaters and state legislators. – – – > Click here to watch the entire event (approximately 1.5 hours).
Thank you to former State Senator Joyce Woodhouse, the Nevada Department of Education, and the entire Kidsvention team for hosting me.
