Boone North Carolina – The App State volleyball team wrapped up its weekend match against ULM on Saturday with a thrilling five-set victory at the Holmes Convocation Center. App State defeated ULM 3-2 (20-25, 24-26, 25-21, 25-18, 15-11). Saturday’s win was the Mountaineers’ fourth five-set win and second come-from-behind victory this season.

In the first set, ULM played well and fell behind 5-0, and the Mountaineers had to catch up.The Black & Gold took on the Warhawks 9-9 after back-to-back kills from the freshmen. Eva Leahy and junior Lulu Ambrose, but ULM responded with a 5-0 run to take a 14-9 lead. ULM held a steady lead throughout the set and won 25-20.
The Warhawks jumped out to a 10-6 lead in the second set, laying the foundation for a 4-0 run to open the set. The Mountaineers got within 10-9 of the Warhawks on Ambrose’s two goals and took the lead on a 5-0 run that included a kill by the senior. madison baldridge and Denny, and three consecutive aces from McBean (14 wins, 11 losses). App State increased its lead to 20-16 on a goal by Ambrose. ULM erased the deficit with a 5-0 run to take a 23-22 lead, but App State answered with a kill by Ambrose and then an error by ULM (24-23). ULM faced App State 24-24 and took the set 26-24.
App State and ULM closed the gap in the third set, with ULM leading 10-5.in a 4-0 run that included kills by Denny and Junior. lauren pleasure, App State managed to take a 13-12 lead. Kills by Pledger and Leahy and errors by ULM gave App State a 16-13 lead. As ULM tried to keep pace with the Mountaineers, the Black & Gold increased their lead to 20-16 on kills from Ambrose and Winterhoff. The Mountaineers closed out the third set at 25-21 on an Ambrose kill.
The fourth set was close, with an ace from McBean and a kill from Winterhoff giving App State a 10-9 lead. The Mountaineers and Warhawks battled point by point, with a total of 15 players. The Mountaineers broke the tie with a 6-0 scoring run that featured kills from Cruz’s ace Leahy and Ambrose and blocks from Ambrose/Winterhoff (21-15). The Baldrige/Winterhoff duo had two strong blocks late in the set. Pleasure clinched the set with a kill for the Mountaineers, 25-18.
App State and ULM were tied at two sets each, with App State scoring the first two points of the fifth and final set. ULM played 4-4 against App State and had a slight lead at 5-4. Pleasure tied the score at 5-5 with a kill. App State took an 11-9 lead on Winterhoff’s kill and McBean’s ace. Kills by Winterhoff and Denny gave App State set point and brought it to match point. ULM made the final block, with Pleasure clinching the set for the Mountaineers at 15-11, winning the match 3-2.
