Hangover and hungry while on vacation? A Brazilian Burger King customer can now get the perfect order without saying a word to solve her two predicaments. A kinder interpretation of facial recognition is that just by showing your face to BK’s mobile app, the fast food giant can determine how hungover you are, how much food you need, and even give you discounts on burgers and drinks. He will do it for you. French fries combo.
The face-scanning technology is part of the “Hangover Whopper” campaign that BK is rolling out through its microsite and its mobile app until January 2nd. Marketing Dive first obtained the details, revealing that the technology changes meal and discount offers depending on the situation. It seems like you have a bad hangover. Level 1 produces a Whopper Junior Double, level 2 produces a Whopper, and level 3 produces a Whopper Double. Unfortunately, the sale only applies to delivery orders.
“At the end of the year, every Friday is the start of a hangover,” BK’s promotional video for the campaign reads. “BK unveils Hangover His Whopper, a technology that scans your hangover levels and offers you the best hangover combinations at a discount.”
The video shows faces in different states suffering from a hangover and the combinations recommended by the technology based on the scans.
Facial recognition isn’t always cute. The FTC last week banned Rite Aid’s AI facial recognition technology, citing complaints of “unreasonable biometric surveillance and unfair data security practices.”
